Poverty remains the main culprit that prevents a person from obtaining a degree. Governments around the world have developed enormous efforts to address it, one of which is education. A large number of aspiring students, who wish to obtain a degree, usually come from less fortunate countries. Despite having exceptionally intelligent individuals, poor countries could offer fewer opportunities for these young talents, making them less useful.
The Commonwealth of Nations or simply known as The Commonwealth is one of those great agents of change in offering distance learning opportunities, especially to its member states and some exceptions. The Commonwealth is composed of 53 members, most of whom have been part of the colony of the British Empire. Having shared the same history, language, culture and values has made the member parties well connected despite not being legally bound to each other.
Target Applicants’ Countries – In an effort to raise the educational morale of its members, The Commonwealth, in partnership with some of its UK universities, has offered a part-time mastery through distance learning. Tuition fees for the online course and other mandatory costs online in the UK are covered. The least developed countries (LDCs) and those with low to middle income are the target population of this grant.
Conditions apply for scholarship applicants. Students who are granted refugee status by a Commonwealth eligible country may also apply. Permanent residents of a developing Commonwealth country are also eligible to participate in the grant.
Classes generally begin in September and the participating universities in the United Kingdom and their online degree programs offered vary each year. Having received funds from the Department for International Development of the United Kingdom (DFID), it aims to motivate students with intellectual qualifications to obtain a degree through the distance learning program Acquire knowledge and skills for sustainable development. This offer is granted to those who cannot assume the costs of being physically present in a class environment due to a large financial restriction.
Scholarship Benefits – Under six themes, this grant covers:
- Science and technology for development;
- Strengthening health systems and capacity;
- Promote global prosperity;
- Strengthening global peace, security and governance
- Strengthening resilience and response to crises; and
- Access, inclusion and opportunity.
Tuition fees for the online course and other mandatory costs online in the UK are covered.
This bold movement can be compared to a saying of teaching a man to fish instead of giving him a fish. Each eligible country offers a wide variety of online degree programs that will be supported by the Commonwealth Scholarship Committee.
